Prolong the lifespan of your MacBook's battery by ensuring you only charge it at the right time, and for the optimal amount, with this open-source menu bar app
Your MacBook's battery will slowly lose some of its charge capacity over time, but the way you charge it can affect its lifespan. Research suggests that batteries are mostly affected by large differences in voltage while charging, as well as by leaving them plugged-in when at 100% charge.
Volta is a tiny menu bar app designed to help you maximize your battery's lifespan by notifying you when you should start and stop charging your device. The limits are fully customizable, and the application is very easy to use, if somewhat basic.
Keep your battery in top shape for longer
Based on the science this app was inspired by, you shouldn't let your device drop below 30% to 50% charge, nor should you charge it all the way to 100% on a regular basis. Naturally, it can be difficult to keep track of this, which is why the notifications can prove useful.
Volta monitors your MacBook's battery level and notifies you when its charge is outside the optimal range so that you can start or stop charging it; this range is set at 50%-85% by default, but it can be customized.
Lacks a bit of polish
While it may do the job, the app could use a bit more work when it comes to the UI. It doesn't exactly look bad, but it isn't particularly impressive either, and no visual customization options are available.
Additionally, the icon is not designed with the dark menu bar in mind, as it becomes invisible when this mode is used; while not a huge issue, it should be addressed as soon as possible.
All in all, Volta is an interesting app that, if nothing else, helps to bring more attention to the science behind prolonging the lifespan of your MacBook's battery. It needs some more work, however, especially when it comes to its visual design.
